This means that the higher up the food chain you go, the greater the concentration of these harmful substances becomes. How Does Biomagnification Work?

The core concept is simple: predators consume multiple prey organisms. Each prey organism may contain a small amount of a toxin, such as a heavy metal (mercury, lead) or persistent organic pollutant (POPs like PCBs). When the predator consumes many prey, the toxins accumulate in its body. This accumulation is amplified as you move up trophic levels.

For biomagnification to occur, several conditions must be met:

  • The toxin must be long-lived: The substance needs to persist in the environment and not break down easily.
  • The toxin must be mobile: It must be able to move through the environment and enter the food chain.
  • The toxin must be soluble in fats: This allows it to accumulate in fatty tissues of organisms, making it less likely to be excreted.

Imagine a simple food chain: phytoplankton (algae) → zooplankton (small animals) → small fish → larger fish → bird of prey. A small amount of mercury in the water is absorbed by the phytoplankton. Zooplankton eating many phytoplankton accumulate a slightly higher concentration. The small fish consuming many zooplankton have an even higher concentration, and so on up the chain. The bird of prey, at the top, will have the highest concentration of mercury, potentially causing severe health problems.

Examples of Biomagnification
